The 2012 United Way Campaign served up a little healthy basketball competition between the Prince Georges County Department of Public Works “Ballaz” and the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections “Renegades”. For the Campaign, both agencies teamed up to hold a charity basketball fundraiser at Cedar Heights Recreational Center.  A greater than expected crowd of fellow employees, family members and agency leadership were on hand from both agencies to support their employees including DPW&T's own Gwen Clerkley, Associate Director of Highway Maintenance and Andre Issayan, Deputy  Director of DPW&T  just to name a few.

In the early part of the contest, the Department of Corrections jumped out to an 8-point lead in the first quarter by moving the ball up the court and landing several jump shots to take the lead.  Public Works seemed to struggle with offense in the early minutes of the game.  The 2-man press defense hedged the ball rotation for Public works.  Transition from offense to defense was a challenge at times for the DPW&T Ballaz.   However, the second half would be different for Public Works.  The team battled to bring the score within 3 points, but the Renegades were able to hold off the DPW&T Ballaz in the second half and win the charity game 31-28.

This well attended event centered on raising money to help those less fortunate in our area for the holidays.  The event raised over $1000 dollars and one hundred percent of the money went to the United Way and its Charities.
